After all this time of bragging about how he would bring down prices and improve the economy, Donald Trump admits that he might be unable to avoid a recession. Clearly, Trump was never serious about protecting the United States' economy and is completely removed from the consequences of his decisions.
What did he say?
In an interview with Fox host Maria Bartiromo, Trump was asked about his plans to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada. While markets have suffered recently due to his erratic stance on tariffs, Americans have been concerned about the risk of a larger economic contraction. 1 2 These concerns prompted Bartiromo to ask rather bluntly, “Are you expecting a recession this year?” In response, Trump didn’t rule it out, saying:
“I hate to predict things like that,” Mr. Trump responded. “There is a period of transition, because what we’re doing is very big. We’re bringing wealth back to America. That’s a big thing, and there are always periods of, it takes a little time. It takes a little time, but I think it should be great for us.” 3
This damning nonanswer is especially frustrating not only because it demonstrates that the strength of our economy and the cost of goods is at risk, but also because of the blatant hypocrisy. Throughout the election, Trump promised to bring drug prices down on “day one,” but prices are continuing to rise, and markets are struggling.4 The average price of eggs, which was a common refrain for critics of the Biden and subsequently Harris campaign, has risen 65 percent since the beginning of 2024. Since December of last year, that price increased by 15 percent. 5 Nothing in Trump’s policies will fix this problem and Trump knows it. Far from improving the lives of Americans, the President is dancing around the reality that he will make it worse.
Conclusion
As Trump undermines the administration, puts an unelected billionaire in power and destroys critical infrastructure that helps veterans, the American people have to come to terms with the reality that they have been hoodwinked. Trump was never interested in reducing the price of goods, he was only interested in holding onto power and avoiding prosecution.
If the American people suffer because of his actions, he doesn’t care. If Americans are going to be able to defend themselves from this recklessness, they must get involved and oppose Trump in every legal way possible and when it comes time to challenge the GOP in the midterms, they must send Republicans in the House and Senate packing.
