The Trump Administration Saves Eric Adams
A new DOJ order suggests that the 'allegedly' corrupt Mayor of New York is seemingly off the hook.
The Trump administration's corruption has taken another step with the newly announced decision that the Department of Justice would stop prosecuting New York Mayor Eric Adams (D-NY). The order from Trump’s DOJ is another example of the complete disregard for the law and order that Trump claims to support.
What was Eric Adams Charged With?
In September of last year, Mayor Adams faced five counts of corruption. Ranging from bribery to wire fraud and soliciting campaign donations from foreign nationals. The 57-page indictment against Adams alleges that since 2014, “..Adams sought and accepted improper valuable benefits, such as luxury international travel, including from wealthy foreign businesspeople and at least one Turkish government official…”
In response to these benefits, Mayor Adams pressured the New York City Fire Department to avoid fire inspections for the opening of a Turkish consular building. Such a blatant example of corruption should merit removing Mayor Adams from his position and, upon lawful conviction, imprisonment.
Here Comes the Trump Administration
The law must be upheld regardless of party. Whether a Democrat like Mike Madigan is found guilty of his bribery schemes or Trump is convicted of falsifying business records, the rule of law must be upheld. Partisanship is not enough to avoid responsibility.
This self-evident principle should be enough for most people, but not the Trump administration. Instead, the Trump administration decided that Adams’ charges were politically motivated and that they prevented the Mayor from handling immigration and crime. It is worth noting that Mayor Adams has repeatedly embraced Trump and his immigration agenda. That is to say, he kissed the ring, and now Trump is trying to protect him.
While the courts will have to determine if the new order stands up, the fact that the DOJ under Trump is trying to protect Mayor Adams before he has even had his day in court should tell you all you need to know about how much Trump values the rule of law. If anything, the law, as Trump and his ilk see it, is an extension of their authority, power, and convenience. Anything more than that is useless to them.
It is a damning display.
